Indian Trekking Adventure in the Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains

22 June – 1 July 2026
From 22 June to 1 July 2026, Mongolia Expeditions had the pleasure of welcoming a group of 15 guests from India on an unforgettable trekking adventure through the spectacular Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in western Mongolia.
Over ten days, the group explored some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Mongolian Altai. Their journey took them across the magnificent Khuiten Glacier, to a hidden turquoise aquamarine alpine lake nestled among snow-covered peaks, through the beautiful Khar Salaa River Valley, and up to the snowy Möst Peak (3,400 m). They also visited the sacred Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, home to one of Mongolia's most remarkable collections of ancient petroglyphs, where thousands of rock carvings tell the story of people who lived in these mountains for thousands of years.

This expedition was much more than a mountain trek—it became a meaningful cultural exchange between India and Mongolia. Along the way, our guests spent time with local Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic families, learning about their traditional way of life and experiencing Mongolia's legendary hospitality. They tasted homemade cream (urum), dried curds (aaruul), freshly baked boortsog, and traditional distilled milk wodka (shimiin arkhi), while sharing warm conversations with local herders inside their gers. One of the most memorable highlights of the expedition was visiting the home of renowned Kazakh eagle hunter Jenisbek, whose remarkable photographs have been featured in National Geographic. Our guests learned about the centuries-old tradition of Kazakh eagle hunting, discovered the unique partnership between hunter and golden eagle, and had the rare opportunity to hold a majestic golden eagle on their arms for photographs. For many, this authentic cultural experience became one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire journey.
The group trekked approximately 90 kilometres, with every step revealing Mongolia's unique landscapes, rich history, and centuries-old nomadic culture. Each morning began by crossing crystal-clear glacial rivers before the day's warmth arrived. Reaching the high mountain slopes early allowed the trekkers to enjoy the cool alpine air and breathtaking views before returning to camp ahead of the strong afternoon winds that are characteristic of the Altai Mountains.

Life in the mountains followed the rhythm of nature. After each day's trek, our guests were welcomed back to camp with delicious, freshly prepared meals by our expedition cook Tugsu, whose hearty dishes quickly became one of the highlights of the journey. His dedicated assistants, Nara and Bayasa worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every meal was prepared with care despite the challenges of this remote wilderness.

Supporting the expedition were 12 Bactrian camels, led by four experienced camel herders, who transported all camping equipment, food, and luggage across the rugged mountain terrain. This traditional method of travel has been used in the Altai for generations and remains the most practical and sustainable way to explore these remote valleys.

Throughout the journey, our experienced trekking guides Aldra and Anu led the group at a comfortable pace, allowing everyone to fully appreciate the dramatic scenery, fascinating wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere of the Mongolian Altai.

This expedition perfectly combined spectacular mountain trekking, ancient history, authentic nomadic culture, and genuine local hospitality. More than just a trek, it was an unforgettable journey that brought together people from different cultures through a shared love of nature, adventure, and discovery.
Whether crossing glaciers, hiking among snow-capped peaks, meeting nomadic families, or experiencing the ancient tradition of eagle hunting, this journey offered an authentic glimpse into one of the last great wilderness regions on Earth.
